School in Chiapas
Projects
The School accommodates a Teacher’s Educational Center and is based on simple forms and on local materials for the creation of a comfortable interior climate, which is compatible with the building’s use and especially its surrounding environment. The embodied energy of the school site is marginal, it is notable that there had been no electricity in the community then. With the use of local materials, responsible design for natural ventilation and daylight use, this building has the attribute of sustainability.
My role was to do site-management for the foundation of the library and also offered handicraft labour. I have reproduced on request the module of a single teaching hall for independent units for other Zapatistas’ communities in Chiapas.
This was a voluntary work for the support of the committee and the local community, 2003
Embodied energy is the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a building, from the mining and processing of natural resources to manufacturing, transport and product delivery.
Humid Tropical Weather
This weather requires good ventilation above all.
The trellis screen instead of glass is typical of the area, protects from direct sun and the roof vents assist the movement of air with buoyancy. The wood is provided by the tropical forest of the habitat.
Module
The design idea is a synthesis of octagons. There can be individual units or assemblage of many that consist the whole.
There are removable panels between the octagons so according to use the octagons can be united to form a hall.
